SoilWeb

"SoilWeb" Gives access to the USDA soil survey information.  It uses a GPS reciever to identify soil properties anywhere in the lower 48 states. It can give vital information in the classroom when you are out teaching.  This app would be great in an Ag or even science class room.

How it works:  It uses your current location to retrieve any and all information about the soil around you.  Basically if you can get cell coverage this app can tell you about the soil in the area you are out.  All you have to do is ask it to search and it will do the rest.

Commodity Prices

"Commodity Prices" is a great app to teach your students about Ag Business.  It will help you track the market and see how prices rise and fall.  You could even do a project where you have students track something like corn prices for a whole semester.

How it works:  It has a simple and clean interface that lets you go in and select many things that are in todays market.  When you select something say the price of hogs, it will take you in and show you all the information about the recent rise and fall of the hog market.  It will even give you videos to watch and news articles to read.

TWRA Native Mobile

"TWRA Native Mobile App"  This app would be great in the agriculture classroom because you have the ability to teach kids things like hunters saftey and boaters safety.  It gives a broad view of many things that the TWRA deals with.

How it works: This app lets you see all guidelines from hunting/trapping, waterfowl, fishing, and boating.  It keeps you up to date on current news from the TWRA.  It also will let you renew any of your TWRA licenses which is relevent because hunters saftey exams can be given to students in a high school classroom and this is a simple and easy way for them to renew them.

Wild Kratts Creature Math

Wild Kratts Creature Math is an interactive app recommended for children ages 6-8.  It is based on a PBS television show Wild Kratts. It costs $1.99 on ITunes but was featured for free from PBS kids free app packet. Wild Kratts Creature Math can be used to help teach math concepts of addition and subtraction through an interactive game. Some examples include, learning foundational concepts, formative assessment, and learning about related math to science concepts. I plan on using this program to review addition and subtraction to help them build on this concept in the future. I used this as a reward for the children to encourage learning in my advanced students or students who need more assistance.

Here is how it works:

Children learn to protect their own wildlife sanctuary by practicing addition and subtraction to gain resources for their Creature Pals. The app can help children learn through being engaged in taking care of the animals. The game will adjust the math problems if the student is getting them all correct. Four individual profiles can be saved the progress of each individual game. It can give the students the ability to feed and take care of animals.

MarcoPolo Weather

MarcoPolo Weather

Description: MarcoPolo Weather is a wonderful app that can be used to help teach science content pertaining to weather. This app allows student to experiment with different elements such as temperature, wind, and percipitation and discover their effect on the weather conditions. It is designed for the IPad, IPod, and IPhone users. In my classroom I would use this app in a center setting to aid to my students understanding of weather.

How it works: Students are able to manipulate the weather conditions by choosing if it is sunny, partly cloudy, rainy, etc. They then can adjust the speed of the wind and the temperate. These choices immediately affect the "wacky" character chosen by the students. They can dress these characters based of the weather conditions they have created.

Sid's Science Fair

Sid's Science Fair is a science app designed to teach science experiments at an early elementary age.  The app comes with three main parts that help students with various early elementary science skills such as sequencing, chart skills, and discovery.

How it works:

Students can explore Sid the Science Kid's room to learn about different science skills.  For example, they can go into various "rooms" and work on things such as sequencing events and work on chart skills in fun, relatable ways.  There is also a section of the app that allows students to discover various collections such as butterflies, buttons, or other things.  Students can also inspect these collections in order to reveal patterns.

National Geographic Explorer for Schools

National Geographic Explorer for Schools

This app brings National Geographic into the classroom through the use of iPads.  This is a free app that gives students an interactive issue of National Geographic explorer every month of the school year.  The best part of this app is not that it is free, but that it has applications and suggestions as to how to link this text to common core and state social studies and science standards.

How it work:

Students open the app to find this month's issue of National Geographic Explorer.  The text is clickable, and has the functionality to be read aloud to the students.  There are also various activities that allow the child to interact with the pictures and images throughout the issue.

SAS Curriculum Pathways Teacher Edition

SAS Curriculum Pathways Teacher Edition

SAS Curriculum Pathways is a web address with a one stop shop for teachers to find resources for ELA, math, science, social studies and Spanish from elementary to high school.  Once the teacher sets up an account they have access to everything.  The teacher will search by choosing a subject such as ELA.  Then they can break it down even further into categories such as reading skills to media skills.  They can also choose the type such as an interactive tool where the students read and the app records them or web only lessons.  The teacher can also break it down into the level such as ES (elementary), MS (middle) or HS (high).  The teacher can add the different apps they choose to their favorites list.  Once the teacher goes to the app they are asked to set up their class, when they click on set up a class they are asked to acknowledge that they have gave each parent the terms and conditions and that they have signed it and agreed to them.  You also have to keep the terms and conditions on file in case SAS ever needs them for anything.

One of the apps on there is called SAS Reading Records.  This app is suited for all students from students that are below, on, and above their levels and also for ELL.  Once the teacher has added students they are able to give the students their assignments.  The teacher can create their own reading or they can choose from the library.  The library has reading material listed by the Lexile Measure level.  This is the students reading level based on their ability not their grade level.  The lower the number the easier the reading level the higher the number the more difficult the reading level.  The teacher can also choose either English or Spanish for the reading material.  Each reading assignment has quiz options and also the type of reading it is.  Once the student selects the title the material to be read appears on the screen for the student to read out loud to be recorded.  The students then complete the multiple-choice questions, open-ended questions (if there are any) and they also do the retell.

This would be a really great website for teachers since they are able to reach all subject areas and grade levels.
